Historical Treasures

The Dunimarle Castle you see today is an impressive and architecturally rich residence, seamlessly blending heritage and grandeur. Originally a modest 18th-century mansion house, it was transformed into a striking castellated villa during the 19th century.

Commissioned by Magdalene Sharpe Erskine (1787–1872), sister and heir to Sir John Drummond Erskine of Torrie (1776–1836), the estate underwent extensive enhancements. A prominent three-storey wing was added to the east, featuring elegant mullioned and transomed windows beneath a crenellated parapet, offering panoramic views across the surrounding landscape.

Among the many additions was an ornate orangery—an expansive glass conservatory designed to nurture exotic plants and fruit. A castellated gateway with monumental iron gates, a fortified garden entrance, drum tower, screen wall, and an elevated terrace enclosing the forecourt all contributed to the castle’s dramatic and romantic silhouette.

The grounds were equally impressive, with formal gardens carefully laid out to complement the architecture. In 1871, the estate was further enhanced with the construction of St. Serf’s Chapel, adding a spiritual dimension to the site’s rich history.

Gardens

In the Footsteps of Jasper Wallace

In 1860, Magdalene and Jasper began transforming the grounds into a living masterpiece. Together, they carefully selected and planted trees that still define the estate today—towering Redwoods, rare and striking Monkey Puzzle trees, graceful Cedars, and sculptural Yews. Their shared vision married horticultural excellence with artistic intent, creating a garden both grand and intimate in scale.
